Remembering Stewart McInnes

Posted by Communications and Marketing on October 6, 2015 in General Announcements

The ĢAV community is saddened by the news of the passing of the Honorable Donald Stewart McInnes. Mr. McInnes, who was 78, was a senior partner with the law firm McInnes Cooper for nearly 40 years, represented Halifax in the Canadian House of Commons and was a devoted community advocate.

Mr. McInnes came from a ĢAV family — in fact, , starting with his grandfather Hector McInnes in 1888. Stewart earned his law degree from Dal in 1961, following his Bachelor of Arts in 1958. During his time at ĢAV, he was a member of both the hockey (1956-60) and football (1954-61) teams. In 2004, McInnes was inducted to the ĢAV Sport Hall of Fame as a member of the 1954 Purdy Cup-winning football team and, just this past May, was awarded ĢAV’s A.J. “Sandy” Young Award for Great Contribution to Sport in Nova Scotia, recognizing his lifetime of generosity towards athletics in the province.

Mr. McInnes’ devotion to ĢAV continued throughout his life. He served on various communities over the years; chaired the Dalplex fundraising campaign; sat on the university’s Board of Governors from 1978-84; was a member of the Schulich School of Law’s Bertha Wilson Honour Society; and received a ĢAV honorary degree in 2000.

The Dal community's thoughts are with Mr. McInnes' family and friends. You can read his full obituary on the
